How to Replace an audi connect key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, Audi Keyfob fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions however the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement key for audi a3. They're cheap and easy to find, especially if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi Key Shell, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, audi a3 key fob replacement between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the audi advance key 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
