Melding form with function, French-door refrigerators offer elegant double doors that open to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer beneath. These refrigerators stand out due to their distinctive features, such as through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We consulted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the best one. They evaluated storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency as well as other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is targeted at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a clever water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs a premium, I expect higher quality.

This fridge is a good option, despite the slight blip. It has a large freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a fair amount of frozen food in comparison to similar models.

The fridge has 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It has a decent sized freezer in the left side. But it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to make an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive, too. The LED lighting is a nice touch, and the in-door storage bins have a third shelf that folds down so that you can store tall items. The drawers come with temperature controls so that you can set them for Beverage, Meat or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, although I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and allows you to control your refrigerator from any place around the world. It also has numerous options for customizing. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when the fridge or freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill which is an option that is available in a handful of other GE fridges that allows you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to pour out simultaneously. It does offer an indicator on the fridge display to show how much water you have left, but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to appear like it's a seamless component in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also comes with a veggie compartment that helps keep vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and has dual compressors for maximum food preservation. The Ice maker is among the most efficient we've ever tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice with a low water usage. This refrigerator is the ideal choice for single household or kitchenettes that want a built-in look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for various reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never fluctuated more than a tiny fraction - this is crucial to avoid the risk of a freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also did well. It reached the initial temperature within an hour, and maintained the temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch has a reputation for premium appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and control your fridge from your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive however, it offers excellent features and functionality at a reasonable price.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge features a standard French door design, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to make space for tall items. There's also a full-width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker, making it easy to transfer the ice when needed. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, too, like sliding drawers that can help you better organize the position of items. It also has a large container for storing frozen food, and a separate container for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. This fridge took longer to defrost food and chill it than some others we tried. This is probably due to its larger capacity.

The other issue we have with the doors of this refrigerator. The sunken handles allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However, taller people still have a hard time closing them without slamming them. It would have been better if they had a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those who want to combine the look of a french door fridge against wall door refrigerator with a more efficient design. Its capacity is higher than average for counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also less expensive than the most expensive counter depth refrigerator that comes with an icemaker, which makes it a desirable choice.

If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't break the bank, this Frigidaire is a great choice. It's a basic fridge that may not be as eye-catching as some of its competitors however, it does have enough features to make a suitable choice. Its most notable feature is the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser and a decent ice maker that operates quickly.

The "Chill Drawer", which sits above the two crisper bins, is another excellent feature. The drawer lets you redirect the majority of your fridge's cooling power into this area so it can be used to store food items that require extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings work better than the specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator were fairly constant across the different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the fridge didn't differ significantly from 38 degrees. That's a good performance, but it doesn't quite make it into the top ten in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat in order to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is constructed of grey-bodied stainless steel with a "smudge-proof" finish. It does an excellent job of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
