Types of UPVC Door Handles

If your door handle made of uPVC is in need of replacement, it's important to find the best replacement for your home. A locksmith can supply and install high-security uPVC handles with extra security features.

The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Please check these measurements to ensure your new uPVC handles will fit.

Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid bar that is pivotally positioned around a point (known as a Fulcrum). When you apply force to the end of the bar, the fulcrum will tend to rotate in the direction that the force is applied. This motion increases the force applied and allows you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you tried to apply directly to the load.

The distance between the fulcrum and the point where you apply the force determines how far the lever can be moved. This is called the mechanical advantage. The more the lever extends the greater the mechanical benefit. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum to the point where you're applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and the end of the lever.

Levers can have different effects based on how the force is applied. For example a lever of class 2 is inclined to turn in the opposite direction when the force applied to it (like a totter-totter). If you push on the door handle the force will create similar rotational effects to this.

However, levers don't create energy. They simply increase the force you exert by changing a small amount of effort applied over a long distance into a greater amount of force applied over a smaller distance. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and move large amounts of cargo. This is also the principle behind the levers you find in a variety of everyday tools such as crowbars, fishing rods hammer claws and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brake of your car.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles, also referred to as upvc door handles, feature levers on both sides to operate the multipoint locks. They come in a variety of designs & finishes and are suitable for a range of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold as a pair for the outer and inner door with spindles & screws included. They are also available in both handed and unhandled versions to suit different types of users.

They can be used to replace window handle existing doors made of upvc. The levers are lowered to open the multipoint locks and the key is turned to lock or close the door. They are more secure in comparison to lever handles for doors because the locking function can only be gained via the inside using an open key, unless the door is locked.

They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt however they are a reasonable alternative for a home with more security. The only drawback is that they do not offer the same level of protection as a cylinder bolt and therefore won't prevent access from outside if the composite door handles has been left open.

This is achieved with a 'pad-shaped' external handle that locks into the gap between the handle and the lock case.

This handle is designed to be used with uPVC multipoint locks that use a split spindle mechanism. This type of operation requires the internal lever handle and the external pad handle to be installed on the same lock case. This could be a straightforward switch from the current uPVC handles, but it might also require changing the lock case or a brand new set of handle furniture to allow for this additional function.
