smart-logo.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for audi key copy evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge key for audi oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
